On November 19th the US Surgeon General, Vivek H. Murthy, MD, released a new report on health disparities related to tobacco use. It is the most comprehensive investigation of commercial tobacco-related health disparities in a single Surgeon General's report to date. Commercial tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. Although there has been an overall reduction in use, cigarette smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke is much higher in some population groups than others.

Dr. Jin Kim-Mozeleski wrote the section on Interpersonal-Level Interventions (pages 643-657) in Chapter 7: "Promising Interventions to Reduce Tobacco-Related Health Disparities". Jin Kim-Mozeleski is an assistant professor in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences and the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods.
