Cleveland Program Overview

Cleveland Program History

The anesthetist profession dates back to the 1960s, when three anesthesiologists—Joachim S. Gravenstein, John E. Steinhaus, and Perry P. Volpitto—became concerned with the shortage of anesthesiologists in the United States. Their concern eventually resulted in the creation of a baccalaureate program at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, which began accepting students in 1969 and graduated its first class in 1973.

The program eventually transitioned to a master-level graduated program in 1987, a decision made to ensure the program graduated competitive anesthesiologist assistants who could contribute to the care team and who had mastered the latest innovations in anesthesia and patient care.

Traditionally, the Master of Science in Anesthesia Program at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ has allowed students both vertical mobility toward a medical degree and lateral mobility into other areas requiring training in biomedical equipment and physiologic measurement.

Today, the MSA Program leads the field in didactic and clinical innovation with strong, annual graduate outcomes and a history of alumni achievement.
