Cleveland is the central seat of Cuyahoga County, the most populous county in the State of Ohio. The city is located in Northeast Ohio on the southern shore of Lake Erie, approximately 60 miles west of the Pennsylvania border.
Cleveland was founded in 1796 near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, and quickly became a manufacturing center owing to its location on the lakeshore and its connection to numerous canals and railroad lines. Today, Cleveland’s is in the midst of nationally-recognized revival in all of its major industries: manufacturing, financial, healthcare, and biomedicine. In recent years, the city has invested in infrastructure improvements, has diversified, and has become known for its cultural and art centers and innovative food scene.
As a revitalized Rust Belt city, Cleveland has repeatedly been ranked as one of the most livable cities in the United States and offers great potential for young professionals.
Our Neighborhoods
The city is comprised of a variety of different neighborhoods that each have their own personality and unique history.
Uptown and University Circle
The neighborhood, which is encompassed by sits on the edge of ǿմý’s campus. It includes several options for restaurants, shopping, and student housing, and is continually growing and expanding alongside the university.
University Circle itself offers countless educational, arts, and cultural attractions as well as easy access to some of the key healthcare institutions where our students rotate.

Little Italy
Nestled right behind the School of Medicine, has been home to Cleveland's thriving Italian-American population since the 1920s. It is home to many quaint restaurants, bakeries, and over 30 galleries.
Each fall, the neighborhood hosts the Feast of the Assumption, a popular weekend-long event celebrating the area’s heritage.
Cedar Fairmount, Coventry, and Cleveland Heights
Our nearest suburban neighbor, boasts beautiful homes, excellent student housing options, great food, and 135 acres of park land. It is home to unique neighborhoods, include which sits “up the hill” from the university, and a neighborhood known for its eclectic personality and popular among students.
Downtown and the Warehouse District
Located just five miles west of campus on the shores of Lake Erie, offers nightlife, shopping, and restaurants. It’s home to Playhouse Square, the city’s center for theater, opera, and dance, and the largest performing arts center in the United States outside of New York. Downtown, you can also find the major arenas and stadiums for our city’s sports teams, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Great Lakes Science Center.
Within the city limits is the known for its upscale bars and clubs, fine dining, outdoor concert venues, and comedy clubs.
Tremont
located just south of Downtown Cleveland, is one of the city's oldest and most historic neighborhoods. Tremont is known for its numerous, hip restaurants, its trendy boutiques, and its Victorian-style homes. The neighborhood has been popular among artists since the 1970s, and each month Tremont hosts an art walk.
Ohio City
Just west of Downtown and the Cuyahoga River, is a diverse, walkable neighborhood home to businesses, restaurants, and historic homes. The neighborhood hosts events throughout the year, and contains several Cleveland landmarks, including the historic West Side Market.
