Youth Engaged in Science (YES) is a -funded program that encourages high school students from groups historically underrepresented in science and medicine to pursue a future in cancer research and care.

YES is a full-time, seven-week, paid summer program offering eligible students opportunities to participate in educational activities and cancer research projects in labs with outstanding Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) scientists based at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½.

Your Future in Cancer Research Starts Here!

Participants receive:

  • A $2,500 stipend for full participation and successful project completion
  • Foundational training in laboratory safety, research techniques, and cancer biology
  • Full-time, hands-on cancer research lab experience (35 hours/week for seven weeks)
  • Daily lunches that include instruction in science, college preparation, and career opportunities
  • An end-of-summer celebration at which students present their results and have the chance to earn awards for best presentation in various categories
  • Writing instruction for scientific communication and college applications
  • College campus experience

Check Your Eligibility

Eligible students must:

  • Attend a Cleveland-area high school
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Be at least 14 years old by the time they begin research activities
  • Meet one or more of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) definitions of groups historically underrepresented in biomedical sciences

Gather the required materials before starting the . You’ll need:

  • Your personal information, including confirmation of your eligibility
  • Answers to the essay questions (Tip: Type your answers to the application questions into a document first. Use a spell/grammar checker to look for mistakes, then copy and paste it into the online application. Avoid one-word answers!)
  • The name and email address of the teacher or counselor who can provide your transcripts and a statement of recommendation

What is the Timeline?

  • March 2, 2025: Completed applications are due by 11:59 p.m. EST (online application, transcripts, and statement of recommendation).
  • April 2025: Potential student participants are notified and sent the parental consent and emergency contact form and a brief survey.
  • May 11, 2025: Forms and surveys must be completed and returned by 11:59 p.m. EDT.
  • June-July 2025: Accepted students participate in the YES program.
