Dr. Diaz has over 21 years of experience developing and managing research projects and conducting statistical analyses of health data in collaborative and real-world settings. Many of these years she was privileged to (1) work as Director of Biostatistics at Vattikuti Urology Institute, one of the pioneer centers of the robotic technique in Urology and (2) work as the American Urologic Association’s methodologist on guidelines and other projects. Both collaborations gave her first-hand knowledge about surgical care, medical innovation and diffusion of technology, evidence generation and assessment, guidelines development and policy. She provided methodological rigor to these endeavors while learning about translating quantitative findings into actionable medical care statements. During her tenure at the VUI, she had the opportunity to build a personalized model of recurrence after robotic prostatectomy which allowed targeting post-surgical management to the disease stage and health status of the patient. This study answered the debated question about the long-term cancer control-based comparative effectiveness of the robotic approach with respect to the open modality. It also proposed a risk-based, post-operative surveillance scheme for optimal medical decision-making. VUI implemented this surveillance scheme. This work received two institutional awards for its contributions to cancer care.
In her role as Chief of the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, Dr. Diaz restructured the division in terms of procedures and staff. These changes translated into a more productively efficient and collegial work environment, as well as a more cohesive and highly motivated team of professionals. This environment assisted in preserving the team cohesiveness and efficiency throughout the pandemic where the team worked completely remote. In this role she supervised an analytics portfolio of research and quality improvement projects from the school’s investigators spanning from onset to completion of about 150 projects per year.
