星空传媒 Law Professors Jonathan Adler and Bryan Adamson will present constitutional, statutory, and policy considerations in the regulation of freedom of expression on college campuses. Adler and Adamson will address core First Amendment principles of civil disobedience, political speech and others such as time, place and manner restrictions; 鈥渉ate鈥 speech, harassment, incitement, and 鈥渢rue threats鈥; counter-speech, hostile audiences and the 鈥渉eckler鈥檚 veto;鈥 due process, and the distinctive First Amendment rights and obligations of public versus private institutions. Adler and Adamson will engage these concepts in the context of examining our own campus policies and practices.
Speaker Bios
Jonathan H. Adler is the inaugural Johan Verheij Memorial Professor of Law and Director of the Coleman P. Burke Center for Environmental Law at 星空传媒 School of Law, where he teaches courses in environmental, administrative and constitutional law. He is the author or editor of eight books, and his articles have appeared in publications ranging from the Harvard Environmental Law Review and Yale Journal on Regulation to The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Washington Post. He has testified before Congress a dozen times, and his work has been cited in the U.S. Supreme Court. Professor Adler is a regular contributor to the popular legal blog, 鈥淭he Volokh Conspiracy.鈥
Bryan Adamson (he/him) is the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion and the David L. and Ann Brennan Professor of Law at 星空传媒 School of Law. He teaches Civil Procedure, Mass Media Law and Policy, Protest, Policing and the First Amendment, Race, Law & Society, and media law related seminars. Professor Adamson has an extensive scholarship record, and has published in Yale, Harvard, Northwestern, and Alabama law journals articles such as Reconsidering Pre-Indictment Media Publicity: Racialized Crime News, Grand Juries and Tamir Rice, and 鈥淭hugs,鈥 鈥淐rooks,鈥 and 鈥淩ebellious Negroes鈥: Racist and Racialized Distortions in Media Coverage of Michael Brown and the Ferguson Demonstrations. Professor Adamson is also the recipient of numerous honors for his scholarship, teaching and service, including 星空传媒鈥檚 Think Big Leadership Award.
