Dr. James (Jim) Hemsath received his Doctor of Management from the Weatherhead School of Management at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ in the Spring of 2017. Dr. Hemsath’s research focused on understanding multiparty collaboration that crosses borders and spans cultures; specifically looking at collaboration as an emergent property from the interaction of empathy, trust, identity and shared vision. Future research plans include creating a teaching case study on the operations of the Ketchikan Shipyard and how a truly flourishing approach has turned around operations; an action research project to further understand aspects of connectedness, consciousness, and shared vision on the creation of a collaborative environment; and taking a step backwards look at the mechanism that bring multiple parties from different countries together to begin with. It is our hope that this research might lead to a new way for regions to work together across borders and across cultures to develop collaborative solutions towards not just sustainable development of Arctic infrastructure and economic development but to create a path where flourishing development can take place. Jim is the Director responsible for the Project Development and Asset Management division of the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, a statuary corporation of the State of Alaska. This group finances, owns, manages, and operates industrial facilities in Alaska. One example of these facilities is the Ketchikan Shipyard, operated on behalf of AIDEA by Vigor, a sponsor of the Fourth Global Forum for Business as an Agent of Word Benefit. In addition to his time at AIDEA, Mr. Hemsath has thirty years' experience managing the development of large projects, predominately in the oil and gas fields. As a member of the U.S. Department of Energy's Arctic Energy Office he managed research projects at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. As a Senior Fellow at the Institute of the North he developed and led an International Polar Year project on Arctic Energy. Additionally, he is a faculty (adjunct) member of the Engineering and Science Management Department at the University of Alaska Anchorage, where he was the recipient of a NASA Faculty Fellowship to Kennedy Space Center. Jim has an undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan and Master degrees in Industrial Engineering (Cleveland State University) and Engineering Management (University of Alaska Anchorage). He was appointed by the Secretary of the Interior to serve on the Science and Technical Advisory Panel of the North Slope Science Initiative as well as sitting on advisory boards for the College of Engineering and the Honors College at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Jim is also a licensed Professional Engineer and a certified Project Management Professional. Jim and his wife Nancy live in Eagle River, Alaska.
