Scientists study aquatic macroinvertebrates to learn about water quality in streams and rivers. Immature mayflies, stoneflies, and beetles are very sensitive to pollution and changes in oxygen and water pH. The Cleveland Metroparks partnered with the University of Akron to scan real specimens with a Micro Computed Tomography (Micro CT) Scanner before 3D printing models at a 5:1 scale. These models help students learn to identify and classify species of aquatic macroinvertebrates in the classroom.
