MN Application Instructions

The Master of Nursing (MN) Program is for students who are ready for a career in nursing and to receive a Master of Nursing degree. This graduate degree prepares students for practice as an advanced generalist registered nurse and to lead inter-professional, evidence-based initiatives to improve health care.


Applying to the MN program

  • Please see the full list of content required for your application and double-check that you meet all prerequisite requirements listed in the sections below.
  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling admissions basis throughout the academic year (September through May). Applications are reviewed when all application materials have been received.
  • Check application deadlines before applying.
  • International students are eligible to apply and must meet both program admission requirements and international requirements.

  • A undergraduate BA, BS or BFA in a non-nursing discipline
  • An overall undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 cumulative (2.75 natural science; 2.75 behavioral sciences)
  • Official Transcripts (from all previous colleges/universities)
    • Completion of required prerequisite courses with a grade of 2.75 or higher is required. See Prerequisite Admissions Requirements for MN Program section below.
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
    • We prefer 2 academic and 1 professional references.
    • Academic references should be persons in a position to speak to your ability to complete graduate level work. At least one, preferably two, should be from a faculty person who taught you in a course.
    • Personal references will not be accepted.
  • Essay
    • In one typewritten or word-processed page or less (single- or double-spaced is acceptable), write an essay delineating those life experiences which led you to seek preparation for professional nursing. Include a statement about your understanding of professional nursing practice (at both the RN and advanced practice levels) and, if possible, state your career objectives at this time.
  • Resume or CV
    • Include employment history, military service, extracurricular activities, academic and professional awards, community service, honors, fellowships, memberships and publications.
  • Virtual Interview

Application review begins in the fall semester one year prior.

Prospective students must have at least two prerequisite science courses completed before admission review; Anatomy & Physiology I with lab, Anatomy & Physiology II with at least 6 credits, Microbiology with lab, or Chemistry. Admitted applicants must complete all prerequisite courses with a B- or higher grade before the admitted semester.

Prerequisites must be taken within 5 years prior to enrollment.

  • Human Growth and Development Across the Lifespan: at least 3 credits (see below)
  • Human Anatomy and Human Physiology (including a lab): Total of at least 6 credits
  • Microbiology: One course, minimum of 3-4 credits with lab
  • Statistics: One course in basic statistics, 3 credits
  • Chemistry: One course; minimum of 4 credits may be required for a non-science undergraduate major.

Prerequisite courses must be taken at an accredited college or university.


NURS 401 Human Growth and Development Across the Lifespan

The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing offers Human Growth and Development Across the Lifespan each spring semester. This course is a 3 credit online course.

Students who successfully complete the course and are also admitted into the MN program will have the course fee of $950 deducted from your first semester tuition.

To register for this course, applicants need to complete a non-degree application.
