The 2023 Centennial of Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing commemorates and celebrates 100 years of nursing education and leadership in Northeast Ohio, and the day in 1923 when Frances Payne Bolton announced her endowment of the School of Nursing at Western Reserve University.

February 2023

Feb. 27 - A Conversation with Nursing Icons and Black History Makers

The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing celebrated Black History Month and kicked off the Centennial Year on Feb. 27, with a panel discussion at the Sheila and Eric Samson Pavilion. The panel featured three distinguished alumni, Barbara NicholsBetty Smith Williams, and May Wykle.

March 2023

Executive in Residence: Margaret Fitzgerald

In partnership with the Veale Institute for Entrepreneurship, Fitzgerald presented a keynote address, "The Difference Between Entrepreneur and Intraprenuer." Fitzgerald also participated in mini events throughout the week, including "Career Advice For Junior Students," "The Nurse Entrepreneur: Business Plans and Investing," "Follow Your Hunch" with FPB instructor Shanina Knighton, and a luncheon with NP students. Fitzgerald is founder of Fitzgerald Health Education Associates. She is an alumna of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing DNP program and member of the Shaughnessy Academy's Global Advisory Board.

April 25 - Global Perspectives: Nursing and Healthcare in Ghana

The School of Nursing was proud to host Christian Makafui Boso, PhD, RN, Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence from the School of Nursing & Midwifery, College of Health & Allied Sciences at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana on April 25.

April 25 - The Future of AI in Nursing 

The School of Nursing, in partnership with the Veale Institute, hosted a panel discussion on the research, clinical, teaching and societal implications of artificial intelligence in nursing featuring Chitra Dorai, PhD, the CEO and founder of Amicus Brain, along with FPB faculty members Shanina Knighton, PhD, RN, CIC, associate research professor; Kylie Meyer, PhD, assistant professor; and Joachim Voss, PhD, RN, ACRN, FAAN, professor and PhD program director. The event was also held April 25.

May 10 - Global Nursing Leadership: Translating the UN Sustainable Development Goals into Action

A virtual town hall discuss on global nursing contributions to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals was held May 10. The discussion was be moderated by Pamela Cipriano, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of the International Council of Nurses and included 5 FPB alumni from around the world, including Zeina Kassem, DNP (NURS '20), from the United Arab Emirates; Ana Solano Lopez, PhD (GRS '16, nursing), from Costa Rica; Norman Carl Stewart, PhD, MSN (GRS '19, '17, nursing), from Botswana; Piyanee Yobas, PhD, MSN (GRS '01, '96, nursing), from Singapore; and Miklos Zrinyi, PhD (GRS '99, nursing), from Hungary.

June 23 - To Love and Be Loved: A Personal Portrait of Mother Teresa, featuring author Jim Towey

The School of Nursing hosted author Jim Towey on June 23 to give a talk titled "Mother Teresa's Example of Living with Purpose." Towey is the author of "To Love and Be Loved: A Personal Portrait of Mother Teresa. This event was sponsored by the Marian K. Shaughnessy Nurse Leadership Academy and was be held at the Samson Pavilion.

Sept. 21 - Changing the Landscape of Health Care: Interventions with Impact & Scale

The healthcare landscape is rapidly changing and the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for evidence-based innovations that are broadly accessible and improve population health. This panel discussion was on Sept. 21 and showcased faculty whose work has impact and scalability, including: Mary Dolansky, associate professor and the Sarah C. Hirsh Professor of Nursing (Age-Friendly Health Systems Implementation in MinuteClinics at CVS Locations); Carolyn Harmon Still, associate professor and the Kate Hanna Harvey Professor in Community Health Nursing (Scalable Health Care Tech for At-Risk Populations); and Matt Plow, associate professor (Remote Health Care and Telehealth)

Oct. 13-15 - ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Homecoming Weekend

Oct. 14 - Centennial Gala

The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing celebrated the centennial of its endowment—100 years of advancing the nursing discipline in Cleveland and the world thanks to the gift of Frances Payne Bolton in 1923. A centennial gala was held October 14 at 6 p.m. in the Tinkham Veale University Center. The goal of the centennial gala was to raise funds for student scholarships through an auction and donor support.

Oct. 26 - ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ LGBT Center: History & Resources

The ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center is dedicated to fostering an empowering, loving and equitable environment for out multifaceted community and to provide support and advocacy to LGBTQ+ individuals, and provide a haven to those seeking solidarity and community. Attendees learned about center's history and heard how its programs have an impact on students, faculty and staff. The event was hosted in person at the HEC 149, and hybrid, and featured: Mailey Lorio, the interim director of the LGBT Center; and two FPB faculty and staff, Colleen Fitzpatrick, department assistant, and Scott Emory Moore, assistant professor; and Scott Wang, second-year student in School of Dental Medicine.

Nov. 14 - Workforce Health Equity Panel

Attendees were invited to learn about health equity projects from nursing leaders at three major U.S. healthcare organizations, and discuss the challenges of the Joint Commission certification process. The panel included Angela Clark, the Maxine Clark and Bob Fox Presidents at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College; Paula Fessler, chief nursing officer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital; Mary Joy Garcia-Dia, program director, nursing informatics, at the Institute of Nursing Excellence and Innovation at Corporate Nursing New York-Presbyterian; and Mary Beth Modic, clinical nurse specialist-diabetes at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Nov. 30 - Access to Health Care for Indigenous Persons: Perspectives for Native Americans

This event featured John Bickers, the Jesse Hauk Shera Assistant Professor at the ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ College of Arts and Sciences, and Randal Sherron, Lieutenant Commander, Med-Surg and ICU Nurse Manager with Claremore Indian Hospital's Oklahoma City Indian Health Service Unit. Bickers presented on the historical perspectives of native American health care while Sherron presented on contemporary issues.

Dec. 20 - The Future of Nursing

Moderated by Greer Glazer, former dean and professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, this panel discussion featured FPB faculty members Latina Brooks, Jesse Honsky, Rebecca Patton and Camille Warner.
