Faculty

Assistant, Associate, or Professor level

The Center for Global Health and Diseases (CGHD) in the Department of Pathology at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ (ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½) is recruiting Assistant, Associate, or Professor faculty to expand its clinical research programs. Applications are encouraged from physician-scientists and PhD scientists whose research involves international patient cohorts, international field work and immunity and pathogenesis of infectious disease.  These positions will be supported by substantial start-up packages.  The CGHD has clinical and translational research programs in adult and pediatric infectious disease (including malaria, schistosomiasis, filariasis and onchocerciasis, SARS-CoV2, Influenza, HIV, HPV, the microbiome and bacterial pathogens) with domestic and international partnerships in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.  The CGHD and Department of Pathology together support research from basic immunology to international clinical trials, an Immunology Training Program, and multiple NIH training grants.  Annual research funding in immunology and infectious diseases exceeds $100M across ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and affiliates. The Pathology Department is ranked in the top 10-13 nationally for NIH funding.  Other assets include the Tuberculosis Research Unit, Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine, Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology, and programs at our 4 affiliated medical centers: University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center and Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ values interdisciplinary thinking, creative collaboration and entrepreneurship.

ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ is located in University Circle in Cleveland, Ohio, a hub for art, culture, and sports with a low cost of living and outstanding schools, making it ideal for family life.  University Circle houses the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum. Cleveland is home to Major League baseball, football and basketball teams and is surrounded by a ring of parks and Lake Erie, ideal locations for hiking, sailing and other outdoor activities. Cleveland is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a stunning lakeshore building designed by I.M. Pei ().

Candidates for Assistant Professor should have a demonstrated record of research success with substantial potential to obtain external funding.  Candidates for Associate/full Professor should have robust funded research programs, national/international reputations and skills to be effective mentors and leaders. Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, statement of research interests and names of 3 referees in a single pdf file to cghdsearch@case.edu

Postdoctoral Scholar - Microbiology

Postdoctoral Scholar - Microbiology

The Lewin Lab is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow interested in understanding the role of diversity and heterogeneity in microbial interactions.

Our human microbiota consists of complex communities where microbial interactions modulate bacterial behavior and influence human health. The Lewin Lab is interested in understanding the role of microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions in polymicrobial sites, especially the oral microbiome. We study oral microbial communities in vitro, in mouse models of infection, and in the human oral cavity to understand these interactions in the context of microbial diversity and the dynamic infection environment. The lab uses classic wet-lab approaches and cutting-edge computational techniques such as metatranscriptomics, comparative genomics, microbial community analyses, transposon sequencing (Tn-seq), and bacterial single-cell RNA-seq.

We have funding for a postdoc to study how genomic and transcriptomic heterogeneity interplays with microbial interactions in the oral cavity. Postdocs are also encouraged to apply for independent funding to pursue this project and projects of their own design.

The Lewin Lab is housed in the Center for Global Health and Diseases and the Department of Pathology at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and affiliated with the Case Western-Veterans Affairs Center for Antimicrobial Resistance and Epidemiology in Cleveland, Ohio. This environment offers a dynamic and collaborative research community to study the human microbiota and its role in disease. In addition, Cleveland is a vibrant and affordable city with a small town feel and big city amenities.

The successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to research, a collaborative work ethic, and strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Scientists with experience in relevant areas such as DNA/RNA-seq, microbial genetics, microbiology culturing including anaerobic culturing, microbial community sequencing analyses, and/or confocal microscopy are encouraged to apply. In addition, the Lewin Lab is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse research environment. All candidates should share these core values, and candidates with diverse backgrounds and identities are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply, please email Dr. Lewin (grl48@case.edu) with (1) a cover letter that details your research interests and why you are applying to this opportunity in particular; (2) a CV; and (3) the names and contact information for three professional references. For more information, see thelewinlab.com or reach out to Dr. Lewin directly.
