Welcome
World-class research is conducted in the Department of Pathology with major emphasis on the following areas and more: cancer biology, infection and immunity, neurobiology/neuropathology, tissue injury and healing, and biomaterials biocompatibility. These emphasis areas are reflected in the three tracks of the Pathology Graduate Program: the Cancer Biology Training Program (CBTP), the Immunology Training Program (ITP) and the Molecular and Cellular Basis of Disease Training Program (MCBDTP). The Pathology Graduate Program provides extensive opportunities for Ph.D. or MD-PhD training in these areas. A separate program leads to the MS degree.
Clinical activities include diagnostic programs in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC). The Department provides outstanding ACGME-accredited (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) training in anatomic and clinical pathology, as well as specialty fellowships. Trainees are encouraged to engage in translational and clinical research opportunities.
The clinical, research and educational activities of the Department of Pathology are located in several locations. Research laboratories and most graduate program teaching activities are located in the Wolstein Research Building (completed in 2003) and the Institute of Pathology. Clinical operations and teaching of residents and clinical fellows are primarily conducted at UHCMC, including operations in the Institute of Pathology. Affiliated sites include the Cuyahoga Medical Examiner's Office, the and the .
Research activities and graduate training are characterized by highly collaborative interactions within the Department and with faculty members in other departments. For example, the CBTP is co-sponsored by the , and the ITP is co-sponsored by the Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine, the , the and the . Ph.D. mentors are based in these departments as well as in the Department of Pathology and in other basic science and clinical departments at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½-affiliated hospitals (University Hospitals of Cleveland, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, MetroHealth Medical Center and the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center).
