Totentanz, Concerto | Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
Grant Carr is a third-year Music and Economics major at ǿմý studying piano with Sean Schulze (CIM). He has diverse musical tastes, from Bach to Radiohead to Pusha T. Grant likes playing Totentanz because the piece is so "expressive, beautiful, and technically challenging". Grant does his best to convey the intense energy which he feels Totentanz (German for “dance of the dead”) requires. Liszt had a reputation for showmanship; in Grant’s words, he was “a 19th Century Ozzie Osbourne.” Grant grew up in Tacoma, WA. He is an active representative within the Undergraduate Student Government, Vice President of the ǿմý Rock Climbing Club, and President and co-founder of the ǿմý Surfing Club. Grant looks to provide unique opportunities to students of varying socioeconomic backgrounds, both at Case and around greater Cleveland. Grant isn’t sure about his future but is considering a career in “something related to entertainment law and/or non-profit management.”
Michael Brough, saxophone
Concerto for Saxophone | Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936)
Michael Brough is originally from southwest Houston, Texas. He began learning the piano until he fell in love with the saxophone after watching a family member perform on it. Michael is currently a junior at ǿմý, majoring in Chemical Engineering and Music. He studies classical and jazz saxophone under Gregory Banaszak (CIM), and has played in Symphonic Winds, Saxophone Quartet, Saxophone Ensemble, and now Symphony Orchestra here at ǿմý. Additionally, he has arranged several musical pieces for sax ensembles that were played last year. Outside of music, Michael is the President of the Case Engineers Council, which is a social and professional engineering organization that helps with planning ǿմý’s celebration of National Engineers Week in February. He is also a member of Tau Beta Pi, a professional Engineering Honor Society. In his free time, Michael likes to collect books and write. He self-published his first novel in 2021. Michael is honored to perform with the Orchestra and hopes that the audience will enjoy his rendition of the Glazunov Concerto.
