Mark Schweitzer is a Research Associate Professor of Economics at the Weatherhead School of Management, ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½. He served as Senior Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland from 2008 to 2024. In addition to serving as Research Director from 2008 to 2014, Mark managed a variety of functions for the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland including regional economic analysis, community development, and data management. Over the course of his career, Mark has also worked as a Senior Economist at the Bank of England, the Denver Branch Executive for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and an Economic Consultant to the World Bank.
Mark’s research interests have spanned a wide range of topics including wage rigidities, minimum wages, regional economic growth, and small business finance. His most recent work has focused on equity of access to credit for small businesses. Mark’s paper on the Paycheck Protection Program was awarded the Abramson Scroll for the best paper for in Business Economics in 2024. Prior work estimated the effects of the opioid epidemic on the US labor market and the critical factor underlying state per capita income growth. These works have been extensively covered in popular media, including the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the Economist, Businessweek and NPR. He has numerous published articles in academic journals, including the Economic Journal, the Journal of Human Resources, Labour Economics, the International Journal of Central Banking and the Journal of Regional Economics.
A frequent public speaker, Mark has spoken about the economic outlook, state economic growth factors, and the effects of opioids on the labor market to more than 100 audiences throughout the region and nation. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago and earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
