Become a Peer Tutor

Peer Tutors are trained to work with students on an individual and/or small-group basis. Tutors can help clarify course content and assignments, connect class notes and reading and practice problem solving.

Peer Tutors are required to make themselves available 7 to 10 hours per week for students to potentially book sessions.  Tutors are responsible for creating their own availability schedules, which can remain consistent week to week or change based on your needs.  Students can not book sessions less than 24 hours in advance, so any availability you create that is not booked 24 hours prior to it beginning, goes back into the tutors day.

Tutors are compensated $12.22/hour for traditional 1-on-1 tutoring and $12.83/hour for study group + 1 sessions.  Tutors are compensated for time spent tutoring.  Tutoring, unlike SI, is more reactive than proactive.  Tutors should not need to plan and prepare materials for sessions, as students will bring with them what they want to work on.

If you are interested in joining the tutoring team, start by reading the Peer Tutor Position Description (PDF).

Eligibility

In order for you to be eligible for a peer tutor position, you must:

  • Earn a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½
  • Earn an A (preferred) or B in the course(s) you desire to tutor
  • Be in good academic standing with the university
  • Be in good judicial standing with the university

Hiring Periods

Applicants are encouraged to apply at any time, but please understand there are two primary hiring periods.  Our largest hiring period is in April/May as approximately one-third of our tutors graduate every Spring.  A smaller hiring period is November/December as we look to fill positions for tutors who are leaving after the Fall semester.  Any hiring outside of these periods will generally be on an as-needed basis, ie, if you can tutor a course for whom we have no one else or our current supply of tutors can not meet the demand.  Thus, if you apply, please know you may need to wait until the next main hiring period to be considered.

Application

** Please list ALL courses you feel qualified to tutor on your application**

Faculty Recommendation

All Peer Tutor applicants must provide a faculty recommendation for each subject (ex: BIOL, CHEM, PHYS) you wish to tutor. Applications will not be reviewed without a faculty recommendation on file.

(Access restricted to faculty and staff.)

We recommend that tutor applicants forward a link of the Faculty Recommendation Form to the respective faculty member.
