Nursing Research News: November 2024

The windows of the HEC with green grass on the other side, sunlight coming through

Each month, the Center for Research and Scholarship at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing sends an internal research newsletter to faculty, staff, students and researchers. A recap is posted here.

A Message from the Associate Dean for Research

Dear Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing Research Community,

As we approach the end of November, I want to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable progress we’ve made together this academic year. Since July, our community has achieved impressive milestones in grant submissions, meeting our ambitious first-quarter metrics and laying the groundwork for continued success.

Our projections for the second quarter look equally promising, thanks to your commitment to excellence and innovation. Your embrace of this year’s motto, RISE (Raise Productivity, Innovate Strategically, Succeed Together, and Elevate Impact). These achievements underscore the strength of our shared mission and the incredible momentum we’re building together.

November is the National Month of Gratitude—a perfect time to pause and celebrate the power of gratitude in sustaining a positive and collaborative culture within our teams and vibrant research community. As the writer Melody Beattie so beautifully said, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.â€

I am deeply grateful for each of you—for your perseverance, creativity, and unwavering commitment to addressing the most pressing challenges in nursing and healthcare. Together, we are transforming ideas into solutions and advancing knowledge that matters.

Let us continue to foster a culture of excellence, high productivity, and gratitude, lifting one another as we strive for new heights.

With gratitude and optimism,

Ronald Hickman, PhD, RN, FAAN
Associate Dean for Research

Distilling Dissertation Research to 1-Minute Pitch

Heba Al Dossary and Megan Foradori, PhD students, were asked to join graduate students from other programs on campus at the Graduate Student Research Showcase for the Academic Affairs and Student Life Committee of the ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Board of Trustees in October.

Two women, on the left one wearing a head scarf outside, one on the right sitting at a table

Charged with summarizing their dissertation research in less than sixty seconds using only one slide, Heba shared her work studying the role of caregiver contributions in enhancing self-care in heart failure patients, and Megan spoke on using machine learning techniques to identify disparities in developmental screening, diagnosis, and service use in young children with developmental delays.

Distilling down complex research methods and findings to a lay audience was a challenge, but they both enjoyed the opportunity to present and learn about the other student research happening at the university.
