Each month, the Center for Research and Scholarship at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing sends an internal research newsletter to faculty, staff, students and researchers. A recap is posted here.

Message from the Associate Dean for Research

Dear FPB Faculty, Staff, and Students:

Black History Month, celebrated every February since 1976, is a time to recognize and appreciate the often-overlooked contributions of Black trailblazers in science and society. If we can acknowledge these historical oversights, it can inform and inspire us to build a future where recognizing diverse perspectives is not only essential for scientific innovation, but also critical for societal progress.

At the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, we value diversity, inclusion, and belongingness. However, we recognize that there is still a lot of work to be done in enhancing the representation of Black Americans and all individuals from diverse backgrounds in our workforce and research.

Our school is a leader in promoting diversity in the nurse scientist workforce and developing effective solutions to engage Black Americans and other individuals from diverse and marginalized backgrounds in research and scholarship. We are committed to promoting health equity through initiatives such as the Provost Scholars Program, the NIH-sponsored Intensive Summer Education Program in Translation Research for Underrepresented Students (INSPIRE-US) program, and the newly launched Center for the Advancement of Community-Engaged Innovation in Health Equity (CACHE).

Our collective efforts are making a difference in promoting representation of people from diverse backgrounds as producers, supporters, and beneficiaries of our nursing and healthcare research.

What a year! The NIH started it off by implementing the NIH Data Management and Sharing policy, a policy that reflected many thoughtful discussions with researchers, professional societies, and NIH staff over the past several years. The year was capped off with Monica Bertagnolli beginning her tenure as the new NIH director. We look forward to supporting her vision for NIH.
