Nursing Research News: December 2024

A lantern covered in snow

Each month, the Center for Research and Scholarship at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing sends an internal research newsletter to faculty, staff, students and researchers. A recap is posted here.

A Message from the Associate Dean for Research

Ron Hickman

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on our goals, celebrating our progress, and looking ahead with renewed purpose. This season offers a valuable opportunity to pause, acknowledge our achievements, and set our sights on the possibilities ahead.

This month’s RE/Search highlights a few of the many accomplishments we can all take pride in—from research milestones to the scholarly achievements of our faculty. Notably, several of our faculty authored influential books this year, contributing to the knowledge base that shapes nursing science, education, and practice. Their scholarship exemplifies the intellectual leadership that defines the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing.

Another point of pride is our success in federal fiscal year 2024, where we secured over $5 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, placing us 8th among private schools of nursing. While NIH funding is not the sole measure of our success, it is a key driver of growth. It creates opportunities for student researchers, supports innovative discoveries, and enhances our school's reputation both domestically and internationally.

As the winter holidays approach, I encourage you to take time for rest, reflection, and renewal. Celebrate all that you’ve accomplished this year and step into 2025 with clarity and purpose.

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a healthy, fulfilling New Year!

NIH News and Updates

It has been almost exactly seven years since we announced eRA Commons was establishing a real-time link with ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor Identification). As we said then, ORCID is a non-profit organization that assigns persistent identifiers to researchers, making it easy for them to maintain up-to-date information and linkages to their various professional activities. For example, thousands of journals incorporate ORCID into their publications, which means that a researcher can automatically see their bibliography—as recorded on their ORCID page—updated with new publications.

NIH just issued a reminder that multiple changes affecting extramural applications and review are coming for application due dates on or after Jan. 25, 2025. .

NIH All About Grants Podcast:

They will explain how input was obtained from the research community over several years, what the changes are, considerations when putting an application together, approaching the science and training plans, mentors, resubmissions, and much more.
