Overview
The Department of Nutrition offers a variety of paid opportunities for students at Ðǿմ«Ã½. While we have occasional short-term opportunities, most are hourly positions through the Student Employment Office. Examples of Opportunities
Teaching Kitchen Assistant
Assists faculty and staff with all aspects of making sure classes held in our teaching kitchen run smoothly, including setup, cleanup, and in-class support. Must be available during class meeting times, as well as an hour before and after. Some shifts may also include deep cleaning, organization, and inventory. Teaching kitchen assistants are required to complete a paid, in-person kitchen training session and unpaid university TA training before beginning work.
Classroom Teaching Assistant (TA)
Assists a designated faculty member with grading, Canvas maintenance, in-class activities, and/or similar duties as needed. Classroom TAs are also asked to spend up to 5 hours per week working on accessibility remediation for existing Canvas content. Unpaid university TA training is required before beginning work. Paid accessibility remediation training is provided for TAs who also work on accessibility remediation.
Wet Lab Research Assistant
Assists with bench science in a faculty member's research lab. Duties vary depending upon the faculty member's field of research and current project(s). Training modules facilitated by Environmental Health and Safety, as determined by the faculty supervisor, are required before beginning work.
Data Science Research Assistant
Assists with analysis of research data. Duties vary depending upon the faculty member's field of research and current project(s). Training modules facilitated by Environmental Health and Safety and/or CITI Responsible Conduct of Research training, as determined by the faculty supervisor, may be required before beginning work.
Community Nutrition Research Assistant
Assists with facilitating community-based research projects, such as . Typically involves the application of public health nutrition principles to design, implement, or evaluate community-based food and nutrition interventions. Duties vary depending upon the faculty member's field of research and current project(s), but may include work at offsite locations within the Cleveland metropolitan area. CITI Responsible Conduct of Research training, as well as any other training modules determined by the faculty supervisor, may be required before beginning work.

The Department of Nutrition is seeking graduate and senior-level undergraduate Nutrition students to serve as teaching assistants for some of our fall 2025 courses. Are you interested?
Job Duties
Teaching assistant responsibilities will vary by class, but may include the following:
- Grading homework, quizzes, and/or exams
- In-class assistance with labs and activities
- Canvas site maintenance
- Holding office hours
- Assisting with proctoring exams
- Literature reviews to update course materials
Additionally, some TAs will have the opportunity to take on additional responsibility depending upon interest and availability. This additional responsibility will be a 3-5 hour per week commitment and will involve working on accessibility remediation to ensure that course documents and Canvas sites comply with university accessibility policies. Paid training will be provided.
Time Commitment and Payment
TAs for Nutrition classes typically work 8-15 hours per week, and hours will likely vary from week to week. Please note that student employees are not permitted to work during scheduled meeting times for classes in which they are enrolled and cannot exceed 20 hours per week between all campus jobs held. Hourly Rate
The Nutrition Department currently offers the following hourly rates for classroom TAs:
- Graduate students: $15.60
- Undergraduate students: $13.20
Student employees are paid twice a month for hours worked, as explained in the Student Employment Handbook.
TA Training
UNIV 300/400
TA training is required by the Office of the Provost for all undergraduate and graduate students who will be serving as UTAs or GTAs. This training consists of a series of online modules that must be completed in Canvas at the beginning of the semester in which you start working as a TA. Additional information can be found on the UCITE TA training website. Students are not paid for their time during this training.
Accessibility Remediation Training
As mentioned above, Nutrition Department TAs will have the opportunity to assist faculty with ensuring that course documents and Canvas sites comply with university accessibility policies. This training includes online modules and a synchronous session hosted by Teaching and Learning Technologies. Additional information will be provided when the schedule is finalized. Students who participate will be paid for their time spent completing this training.
Eligibility and Applications
Eligible students must:
- Be enrolled at least half-time in one of the following programs: Nutrition MS, Public Health Nutrition MS, Nutrition BA/BS (seniors only), or Nutritional Biochemistry & Metabolism BA/BS (seniors only).
- Have completed the course for which they will serve as a TA, or an equivalent course at another institution, and earned an A.
- Be eligible for hourly campus employment through the Office of Student Employment.
- Complete university-required TA training.

The Department of Nutrition is seeking undergraduate and graduate students to assist in our Teaching Kitchen classes. Are you interested? Please see the details below:
- Students must commit to all required training sessions, including university TA training, online kitchen training modules, and one 2-hour, paid orientation session to be scheduled during the first week of classes
- Students must be able to commit to the full, stated time block
- Preference will be given to students who can commit to this time block for an entire half semester of the class.
Applications will be accepted through June 13. Zoom interviews will be conducted in July, and hiring decisions are expected to be made in early August.
Job Duties
Under the supervision of the Teaching Kitchen Coordinator, Teaching Kitchen Assistants will be responsible for:
Pre-lab setup
- Setting out equipment and ingredients at cooking stations
- Measuring ingredients as needed
Assisting students during sessions under the supervision of lead faculty and teaching kitchen coordinator
- This may include finding missing ingredients or equipment, demonstrating techniques, assisting with spill cleanups, etc.
Post-lab cleanup
- Putting away/disposing of leftover food
- Collecting dirty dishes and cookware
- Loading cookware and dishes into dishwasher
- Hand washing cookware and dishes as needed
- Loading aprons and towels into washing machine
- Putting away clean cookware and linens
Weekly inventory and deep cleaning
- Under the direction of the kitchen coordinator, assist with conducting a weekly inventory of ingredients
- Dispose of leftover food
- Deep clean appliances and surfaces
Hourly Rate and Shifts
The hourly rate for teaching kitchen assistants is $15.60.
Culinary labs are generally about 2.5 hours long, and setup and cleanup add an additional 1.5 hours to each shift. Kitchen assistants will be responsible for setup, cleanup, and support during labs. Preference will be given to kitchen assistants who are available for two or more shifts during the following time blocks (subject to change based on enrollment).
Training
All kitchen assistants will be required to complete university-administered TA training, a series of asynchronous kitchen-specific training modules, and a 2-hour, in-person orientation session in the teaching kitchen.
The kitchen orientation session will be scheduled during the first week of classes. This orientation will focus on kitchen familiarization and safe food handling procedures. The Department of Nutrition will pay any required training fees for all kitchen assistants. Students will also be paid for their time during Nutrition-sponsored training and orientation.
TA training is required by the Office of the Provost for all undergraduate and graduate students who will be performing paid work in service of a course. This training is provided asynchronously in Canvas and must be completed at the beginning of the semester (deadline TBA). Additional information can be found on the UCITE TA training website. Students are not paid for their time during this training.
