MS in Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry offers a 15-21 month Master of Science (MS) degree that combines classroom and optional research experiences to prepare students for employment or further studies.

Our graduates follow a number of career paths:

  • Entry into PhD programs and professional programs in the health sciences.
  • Employment in academic, government, hospital, and industrial laboratories.
  • Employment in fields not directly involved with research, such as teaching and administrative positions in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

Read testimonials from our former MS students.

Our exceptional program is located in the School of Medicine at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, which is ranked #1 in Ohio and #24 in the U.S., according to U.S. News and World Report's 2022 rankings.

New for fall 2024:  the number of required course credit hours has been reduced from 36 to 30.

The Biochemistry MS curriculum is flexible and allows students to choose electives according to their interests. Our MS students can take new experimental and professional biotechnology courses, and can choose courses to complete any of five optional within our MS program. Please visit the curriculum page for details.

The degree can be completed with either full- or part-time study. Many research assistants in ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ biomedical science laboratories have earned MS degrees with part-time study.  Please contact us if you have questions.

The MS in Biochemistry is also offered in combination with a professional or second graduate degree in several dual-degree programs.

We participate in ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s Graduate Student North Star Program, which invites students from our partnering Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to join us. The application deadline is June 1.  Please visit the North Star web site for details.
