Preservation Services

Responsibilities:  

  • Process and sew thin book-format materials into pamphlet binders using a variety of styles
  • Construct different types of pockets for loose parts and attach to binders or books
  • Complete basic repairs of circulating books using a variety of specific methods
  • Make custom boxes and other protective enclosures for books and library materials
  • Inspect gift books for presence of insects/mold and physical condition
  • May assist with digitization and/or specialized collection imaging for treatment documentation
  • Tip-in errata sheets, indexes and correction pages to books and journals 
  • Accurately enter specific treatment data into a computer
  • Offers opportunity to engage in Conservation/Preservation research to create new tools or procedures for the lab
  • Assist with unpacking, post-processing and sorting of commercial bindery shipments
  • Assist Team Lead in more complex treatments 
  • Assist Team Lead in designing and integrating technology and AI into laboratory operations 

  Required Skills:

  • Must have excellent fine-motor skills and natural ability to work well with one's hands.*
  • Familiarity with Studio Art, Art History, and basic Chemistry is preferred 
  • Neatness, accuracy and attention to detail is essential for this position 
  • Must be able to competently interact with databases and be familiar with MS Word, Excel, and similar programs
  • This position involves light to moderate lifting and exposure to dust, mold, and other possible allergens. There is potential for injury due to the use of sharp cutting knives, sewing needles, and a board shear. Repetitive stress injury due to stamping and other repetitive wrist movements is a possible risk. 

* Applicant must take and sufficiently pass a hand skills test before an offer of employment is made.

Hours Needed: Up to 20 hours, in blocks of time of two hours or more, Monday - Thursday between 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Hourly Rate: Undergraduate $12.22
