An early and vocal supporter of social work education at Western Reserve University, James E. Cutler taught the first formal sociology courses at the institution. He also co-founded and was the first dean of what is now the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, serving in that role from 1915 to 1941.
