The Daniel Lewis Ravin, MD Award honors current MD and PhD students enrolled in the School of Medicine at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ who show promise in the fields of occupational or environmental health. Daniel Lewis Ravin, MD was a 1980 graduate of the ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ School of Medicine. Dr. Ravin died tragically early in his career. The award honors his dedication to training the next generation of environmental and occupational health physicians and scientists.
The Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health offers 1-3 Ravin Awards per year to trainees who are committed to furthering their professional development in environmental and occupational health. The $10,000 award supports:
- $8,000 for stipend support at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ School of Medicine
- $2,000 for Professional development (i.e., attendance at a national conference, additional training in these fields) or Research costs (i.e., data collection, participant stipends)
Awardees, in consultation with a mentor from the Swetland Center, will develop a budget defining how the $2,000 professional development and/or research costs will be used during the 12-month award period.
Ravin Awardees will complete the following activities to fulfill their role:
- Create a budget professional development and/or research costs and a training plan in consultation with a faculty mentor from the Swetland Center.
- Meet with faculty mentor at least twice over 12 months.
- Fulfill all activities in approved training plan in the fields of occupational and environmental health.
- Submit a summary of your experience for publication in the Swetland Scoop newsletter and present about the experience to Swetland Center faculty and staff.
- Application form including two (2) brief essays
- Describe your interest in the fields of occupational and environmental health (500 words)
- Describe how this award will advance your career in the fields of occupational and environmental health (500 words)
- Eligibility Screening Form
- For MD students: from Society Dean
- For PhD students: from your dissertation research advisor
- One Reference Letter: from someone who can speak about your interests in occupational and environmental health (could be same person completing the eligibility screening form)

- Current MD student or PhD Student (successfully completed qualifying exam) in good standing at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ School of Medicine.
- Demonstrated interest in the fields of occupational and environmental health.
- Commitment to complete additional training and/or research in occupational and environmental health.
Priority will be given to applicants whose interests align with the key research areas of the Swetland Center:
- Food Systems and Health Equity
- Air Quality and Health
- Environmental Justice
