The Swetland Center is excited to welcome our newest intern Maurice Lucious who is finishing his master's of public health degree at Walden University. He will be assisting the Food Nest team this fall as they prepare for their 'Food Nest and Friends' research dissemination day. His efforts will contribute to the team's holistic understanding of the complexity of nutrition equity through the published work derived from the foodNEST data.
Please join us in welcoming Maurice and learning a little more about him below!
Where are you from?
I am born and raised in Cleveland. I grew up in East Cleveland and am a graduate of Shaw High School. I lived in Port Royal, SC for 6 ½ years working in a cardiologist office before moving back home to Cleveland in 2012.
What is your background in?
My background in healthcare is more in management roles. I worked as an office coordinator in South Carolina and led the front office staff. Before starting my current position, I worked as a Practice Lead in a cardiology practice. I’ve also worked in patient accounting with University Hospitals before transitioning to the UH ACO and working as a patient navigator. I have done a lot of working connecting patients with needed services that are available both in the UH system and in the community. I also have experience working with patients increasing awareness around needed medical screenings and other avenues of preventive care. I also have worked teaching tobacco cessation to UH employees.
What excites you about joining the Swetland Center?
The thing that excites me the most is meeting new people and seeing the different experiences that everyone brings to the organization. The work that is being done at the Swetland Center is important and it is exciting to know that I will be a part of work that is helping to improve the lives of others.
What is your favorite outdoor space in Cleveland or a place you want to explore?
My favorite outdoor spaces in Cleveland are places around the water. Either in the flats, at the 55th street marina, or other places such as Euclid/Wickliffe where I can park the car and sit or walk with the lake in the background.
What is a piece of advice you have been given or quote/statement that is significant to you?
One of the best pieces of advice I have received is to be specific about my life. Determine what I want to do or where I want to be, make plans, and execute.
