Treatment Implementation Protocols (TIPs). 

Explore the full TIP series from the

  •  Recommends guidelines for primary care clinicians to follow in caring for patients with alcohol abuse and drug abuse problems. Discusses screening, assessment, brief intervention, medication-assisted treatment, and legal issues of patient confidentiality.
  •  Offers treatment providers guidelines on caring for people with physical disabilities or cognitive disabilities, as well as drug abuse or alcohol abuse problems. Discusses screening, treatment planning and counseling, and linkages with other service providers.
  •  Offers guidelines to help clinicians influence the change process in their clients by incorporating motivational interventions into substance abuse treatment programs. Describes different motivational interventions that can be used at all stages of change.
  •  Educates substance abuse counselors and clinicians about detoxification and withdrawal. Addresses patient placement, detox services for specific substances, co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions, financing issues, and screening and assessment tools.
  •  Provides clinical practice guidelines for using four medications in the medication-assisted treatment of alcoholism and alcohol abuse: acamprosate, disulfiram, oral naltrexone, and extended-release injectable naltrexone. Also discusses patient management.
  •  Equips clinicians with practical guidance and tools for treating chronic pain in adults with a history of substance abuse. Discusses chronic pain management, including treatment with opioids, and offers information about substance abuse assessments and referrals.
