Journalists Kaitlin Durbin and John Tucker engage in a robust discussion about their 6-week in-depth exploring the experiences of kids in the juvenile justice system and what led them to become caught up in that system. The series did a deep dive into their childhoods, shedding light on issues of trauma, the impact of a legacy of disinvestment in many Cleveland neighborhoods, the realities of teen brain and adolescent development, and the common desire for connection and belonging. The reporting and the webinar also cover the use of bindover, court diversion, community programming, and the experience of victims and many other community voices.
Reporters give an inside perspective in this webinar, sharing what they learned personally in the process of investigating and reporting in this way. In doing so, the dialogue highlights how journalists and other media professionals can strive to amplify youth and family lived experiences in reporting and consider the conditions often the root causes of crime rather than sensationalizing crime and violence.
Moderated by Leah Winsberg, Esq., Senior Policy Attorney and Cyan Blackwell, Youth Justice Policy Associate at the Children's Law Center; Gabriella Celeste, J.D., Policy Director at the Schubert Center for Child Studies, ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½; and Pat Gleydura, Policy Strategist at the ACLU of Ohio, this webinar seeks to improve the public's understanding of the juvenile justice system and the young people in or at risk of entering that system and offers a call to action to concerned community members interested in improving opportunities for our youth and the greater Cleveland community.
