Policy Director Gabriella Celeste Presenter at the Regional Police Accountability Conference on Police-Youth Interactions

Gabriella at the June 6th conference

The Schubert Center for Child Studies is proud to announce that our Policy Director, Gabriella Celeste, participated in the recent MORE TO DO: Regional Police Accountability and Public Safety Conference. The event, which took place from June 6-8, 2024, in Cincinnati, Ohio, brought together diverse community stakeholders to discuss and develop strategies for enhancing public safety and police accountability.

Gabriella Celeste contributed her expertise to Saturday's "Improving Policies for Youth-Police Interactions" workshop. She joined colleagues Lisa Thurau, Executive Director of Strategies for Youth, and Sasha Naiman, Executive Director of Children's Law Center, Inc., to address critical issues surrounding youth interactions with law enforcement.

The workshop centered on creating and improving policies that foster safer and more respectful interactions between police and young individuals. Participants delved into the recently published national recommendations, "12 Model Law Enforcement Policies for Youth Interaction," developed by Strategies for Youth. These guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for law enforcement agencies to enhance their approaches to dealing with youth.

These measures are designed to ensure that police interactions with youth are informed by understanding child development and promote positive outcomes. "The insights shared at this workshop are crucial for shaping how communities across the country approach youth-police interactions," said Celeste. "By learning from successful implementations in cities like Cleveland, we can work towards creating safer and more supportive environments for our youth."

The Schubert Center for Child Studies is grateful for Gabriella Celeste's representation and her continued dedication to improving the lives of our youth involved in police interactions and the juvenile justice system. Her participation in the conference underscores her commitment to promoting justice and safety for all youth.
