Angela Newman, BA, MA

Executive Director
First Year Cleveland
Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences

Angela Newman-White has over 18 years of public health experience focused on addressing inequities in maternal and child health.  Her most recent role as Grant Supervisor at the Cuyahoga County Board of Health included establishing, overseeing, and coordinating various maternal and child health programs, services, and initiatives since 2011.  Before this role, she spent six years with a local healthy start project, MomsFirst, at the City of Cleveland Department of Health.

Angela is passionate about grassroots efforts that address policy and system-level changes to support equity and overall health.  Focusing heavily on anti-racist work, she has been working in the greater Cleveland area to provide perspective transformation and shift the narrative from individual responsibility to shared system-level accountability and commitment to change. She has led and participated in various collective efforts to support Black women and families to ensure opportunities for healthy birth outcomes. Past successes include expanding CenteringPregnancy, establishing One Community framework to provide a platform for resident involvement in community-driven strategies, advocacy efforts to support equitable access to labor and delivery services, and improving access to public transportation through infrastructure changes and financial assistance.

In addition to participating in local and state collaboratives, in 2019, Mrs. Newman-White was elected to the CityMatCH Board of Directors and appointed to the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services Advisory Board. Her leadership with the DCFS Advisory Board contributed to an investment to establish the county’s first Child Protection team, a collective approach across the hospital system, and supportive systems to identify and address risk factors associated with child abuse and neglect. Angela holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Bowling Green State University and a Master of Arts in Sociology from Cleveland State University.
