The Schubert Center for Child Studies will launch the “All Our Children: Healthy Inside and Out” conversation series Thursday, Oct. 1, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Iris S. and Bert L. Wolstein Research Building auditorium.

The event will feature a presentation from Annemarie Grassi, CEO of Open Doors Academy, titled “The Fish Versus the Fisherman: Equipping Youth with the Tools to Thrive.”

The social sector, Grassi argues, historically has been more heavily focused on handing out “fish,” rather than engaging in efforts that create long-term, deep-impact change. Open Doors Academy, a high-quality youth developmental enrichment and leadership program, uses a seven-year program model that seeks to create a village of fishermen.

Grassi will discuss how research- and performance-based goals provide guidance for Open Doors Academy and implications for quality standards in youth development and leadership programming.

Lisa Damour, clinical instructor in the Department of Psychological Sciences and director of the Laurel School’s Center for Research on Girls, will be the community respondent at this event.

The event is free and open to the public.  Community Partners: Open Doors Academy, Facing History & Ourselves, Teach For America, Esperanza, MyCom, Starting Point and Broadway P16.
