Meet the people involved with the The Intensive Summer Education Program in Translation Research for Underrepresented Students (INSPIRE-US program) at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, a 10-week summer program designed to promote greater diversity in clinical and translational science by providing an intensive education in translation research for URM undergraduates.
Ronald Hickman
Ronald Hickman, PhD, RN, ACNP-BC, FNAP, FAAN, is co-director of the INSPIRE-US Program. He is the Ruth M. Anderson Endowed Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. Dr. Hickman is a nurse scientist who has received numerous national and international awards for his translational research focused on decision support and self-management technology. He has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and other foundation sponsors. Dr. Hickman is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in the clinical and translational science workforce, recognizing its importance in achieving health equity.
J. Daryl Thornton
J. Daryl Thornton, MD, MPH, FCCP, FACP, ATSF is co-director of the INSPIRE-US Program. He is Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at The MetroHealth System. Dr. Thornton is the Director of the Center for Health Equity Engagement, Education, and Research (CHEEER), a National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Center of Excellence. Dr. Thornton’s research involves designing and implementing behavioral interventions for disparate populations affected by respiratory diseases or critical illness. He has received funding from NIH, HRSA, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Thornton is a well-regarded mentor and teacher, mentoring undergraduates, medical and graduate students, residents, and fellows.
Morgan Whaley
Morgan Whaley is a clinical research coordinator in the Center for Health Equity Engagement, Education, and Research (CHEEER) at The MetroHealth System. Morgan assists with multiple projects, using qualitative and community-engaged methods. Morgan has an educational background in public health which has fostered a passion for health science research and community building.
