In only their second year of participating in the Ohio Contractors Association Student Estimating Competition, the team from �ǿմ�ý’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering took home the top prize.

Last month, Cleveland’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) section named Xiong (Bill) Yu, chair of �ǿմ�ý’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, its Civil Engineer of the Year for his contributions to education, research, service and leadership.

“Sometimes I get emotional,” Rashidi said. “I feel that I have come back home. I really am here to try to give back what I gained from Case.”

Late last year, Environmental Science and Technology, a premier journal for environmental research, awarded Huichun (Judy) Zhang, the Frank H. Neff Professor in Civil Engineering, a best paper honor for her work, “Machine Learning: New Ideas and Tools in Environmental Science and Engineering.”

Associate Professor Christian Carloni’s talk, “Pull-out Tests of FRP Bars Embedded in Concrete: A New Insight,” received a best presentation award at the second annual workshop organized by the Transportation Infrastructure Durability and Life Extension Center—a National University Transportation Center funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Since 2009, �ǿմ�ý fellows have helped hundreds of local K-12 students with their science fair projects. This year, the 32 Gelfand Fellows continue the tradition, working with students at 10 schools across Cleveland to plan, prepare and present their science fair projects. 

Vishnu Ramasamy, a second year PhD student working under John Lewandowski in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is well versed in working with 3D printers. He’s even worked on building one that is capable of 3D printing wind turbine blades.

After shadowing her father, a mechanical engineer, as part of a class in eighth grade, Melinda Lake-Speers was inspired to sign up for an introductory engineering and design course in high school.

The ASM International Student Speaking Symposium was a big success for Sylvie Crowell, a senior in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at �ǿմ�ý.
