This program is offered by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, in collaboration with the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and other health systems. This program expands on the established internship program in Oral Medicine, with additional intensive academic training and rigorous clinical or basic research experiences.

The department includes faculty members who are board certified in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, one member with dual medical/dental training, and three members with graduate degrees in basic sciences or public health. Our scope of expertise expands the full scope of oral medicine, orofacial pain, sleep medicine (oral appliance management), oral oncology, head and neck anatomy, and oral and maxillofacial pathology. In addition we collaborate with faculty members trained in oral medicine in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program (AEGD) and at the Cleveland VA Medical Center.

The oral medicine service provides care to a variety of patients with conditions including mucosal disorders, autoimmune disease, rheumatologic disease, transplantation, oncology, salivary dysfunction, and facial pain. The Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain clinic has approximately 4,500 patient visits per year. Research and clinical opportunities exist in synergy with the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Biological Sciences, AEGD, and multiple medical specialty Divisions at the UH Cleveland Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic, and Metrohealth Medical Center.

The didactic program expands for two years. The student meets with the program director at the beginning on the program to review the course of study, following oral medicine training competencies established by the American Academy of Oral Medicine, with six-month evaluations. Didactics include coursework in research design, statistics and critical assessment of the scientific literature, oral medicine, facial pain, oral and maxillofacial pathology weekly seminars, weekly morbidity and mortality rounds, journal club, and case presentations.

Clinical rotations include two week rotations on medical services at the UH Cleveland Medical Center, Seidman Cancer Center, and other affiliated hospitals. Available rotations include Internal Medicine, ENT, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pediatric ENT, Dermatology, Neurology, Infectious Diseases, the Bone Marrow Transplant program, and Tumor Board.

Emphasis is placed on preparing the graduate student for interprofessional research and oral medicine care.
