Pave Your Way in Biomedical Research
Biomedical engineering at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ launched in 1968 as one of the first biomedical engineering programs in the United States, bringing together the disciplines of engineering and medicine. Today, we offer students a comprehensive curriculum along with hands-on lab experience and real-world industry opportunities.
Top students from around the globe choose ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ for our intensive faculty-student interactions and physician collaborations with major medical centers, including Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals.
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree program with a major in Biomedical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, , under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Bioengineering and Biomedical and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.
Innovative Education at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½
In the Department of Biomedical Engineering, our innovative undergraduate education program was established in 1972 with the introduction of the BS degree in biomedical engineering. From the beginning, the BS in BME program at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ implemented courses that integrated engineering and biology and were taught by faculty members within the department.
This integrated educational model has become the bedrock for undergraduate BME education at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½. The department was built on the premise that engineering principles provide an important basis for innovation and unique solutions to biomedical problems. Therefore, the undergraduate curriculum includes core engineering and biomedical courses coupled with courses in a specialty area chosen by the student.
Additionally, students gain practical experience in the required biomedical engineering I and II laboratories. Students learn within faculty research laboratories on campus, as well as at the many local medical facilities within walking distance, including the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic.
