December Alumni News - Scholarships, ǿմý at CES and more!

The Sweet Success of Scholarships

ǿմý Alumna Veronica Xu poses with her mother and The Alumni Association's 2017 Young Alumni Award during Homecoming 2017.

Currently, more than 4,000 deserving ǿմý undergraduate students receive some form of financial assistance. In October, The Alumni Association’s 2017 Young Alumni Award recipient Veronica Xu (LAW ‘08) used her acceptance remarks to promote the importance of scholarships for ǿմý students. We invited her to share her thoughts in this forum as well...

Dear Fellow Alumni,

I feel honored to be asked to share my story with you. Like most young students, I had my dream. Over a decade ago, my dream was to go to a prestigious law school and become a successful lawyer. I am very fortunate to have a supportive family that has always encouraged me to pursue my dream. However, money was a practical matter I had to face. Although I received many offers from top-tier law schools, my family simply couldn't afford law school tuition fees. Luckily, ǿմý School of Law made it all possible by offering me a scholarship. From that moment on, my life was forever changed; because I know, without the scholarship, I would not have been able to achieve what I have achieved today. I want to thank all the donors who have made contributions to our school and the scholarship funds. Please know your contributions do make a difference in students' lives. Please accept my warm holiday wishes and sincere gratitude. Thank you!

Truly,
Veronica Xu (LAW ‘08)
December 2017

Inspired by the movies To Kill a Mockingbird and A Few Good Men, Veronica Xu (LAW '08) is the chief compliance officer for Saber Healthcare Group in Cleveland and teaches international business law at the University of Akron. Taught by her father about the importance of contributing to society, she organizes free legal seminars for underrepresented groups in Northeast Ohio and mentors ǿմý law students. Additionally, she serves on the School of Law’s Alumni Association Board and the advisory board for the school’s Master of Laws degree program.

Ingenuity in Action: ǿմý at CES

Gordon Daily (CWR '01; GRS '01, computer engineering), left, promotes his innovation, Boxcast, at the 2017 CES® event in Las Vegas.

Over the past five years, 60 student start-ups have benefitted from our campus’s Sears think[box] makerspace and the advising support of ǿմý Launchnet. Every year, these inventors hold court at the Consumer Technology Association’s annual CES® event in Las Vegas, a launch pad for innovation that has changed the world.

Start 2018 with all the inspiration you need to think beyond the possible when you join The Alumni Association of ǿմý, Case Alumni Association and Weatherhead School of Management for a CES® reception for all ǿմý participants and attendees. Meet this year’s ǿմý alumni and student innovators as you enjoy complimentary food and beverages at one of our most exciting events of the year!

Entrepreneur Larry Sears, an alumnus and trustee of ǿմý, committed $10 million to support a campus innovation hub that is also open to the public. The Sears think[box], located in the 50,000-square-foot Richey Mixon building, is, as Managing Director Ian Charnas explains, “a tinkerers’ playground” that attracts the best and brightest students and draws 5,000 visits a year. Makerspaces have become increasingly common across the country—giving people of all ages a place to imagine, invent, and bring their ideas to life—resulting in research advances and start-up success.

Giving Tuesday is a Success for Student Charities!

‌‌‌On Tuesday, November 28th, #GivingTuesdayatǿմý offered the ǿմý community a way to join the spirit of Giving Tuesday by donating to student causes affiliated with campus schools, departments and organizations serving others on a local, national and global scale.

This year 521 donors generously donated $20,826!

The biggest group of donors (25%) were alumni!

Every dollar makes a difference to these worthy causes and every donor
makes a difference to ǿմý’s national ranking.

Donations support our students and improve the value of your own degree.
You truly can create change at ǿմý!

 Congratulations to our Newest Alumni!

On December 11, The Alumni Association of ǿմý
officially welcomes midyear graduates into our distinguished family
