UTech Research Computing maintains a high-performance computing environment, high-end visualization wall, research storage, database support, and support staff with expertise in computing, visualization, data modeling, and networking. 

Our Mission

‌The mission of UTech Research Computing is to facilitate cost-effective access to IT resources for the research community at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½. These resources include high performance computing services, large-scale research storage services, database design and programming services, visualization services, and pre-award IT consultation. UTech Research Computing is prepared to engage with faculty in technologies as they emerge at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and incorporate them into the suite of centrally supported services.

UTech Research Computing provides an advanced medium-sized supercomputing facility for research and scholarship activity. The HPC resources has about 95 Tflops of combined CPUs and GPUs peak performance compute capacity and almost 1 PB of total storage. The HPC cluster facility is located under the Kelvin Smith Library in a separate environmentally controlled data center room. As of April 2014, the HPC Resource has grown to 2800 CPU cores, 25000 GPU cores and 10 Gigabit ethernet interconnect between the compute nodes. A subset (24) of the cluster nodes contain (48) NVidia Tesla M2090 "Fermi" graphics processing units (GPUs). UTech Research Computing maintains a parallel storage system from Panasas (187TB) and a near-line Nexsan-based storage (700TB).  For visualization, UTech Research Computing also provides a 21-display, 84 megapixel visualization wall for research and instructional use.

With the receipt of an NSF CC-NIE award in October 2013, ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ has deployed a Science DMZ on its network to optimize network configuration, security policies, and performance to support robust connectivity for high performance scientific computing, high volume data transfers, visualization, and the ability to remotely control experiments or to participate in experiments at a distance.  The deployment includes IntraOhio and Internet2 connectivity speeds at 100 Gigabits per second.

The growth of these resources has been funded through the investment by the Division of Information Technology Services, the Office of the Provost, and researchers in the School of Medicine, the School of Engineering, and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Advisory Committee on Research Computing

The Advisory Committee on Research Computing (ACRC) advises UTech on strategic issues related to the support of the ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ research community's IT-related needs.
