Is this Job Opportunity Email Really a Scam?

Summary

From mail clients obscuring email addresses to advanced spoofing techniques, it is often difficult to determine if an email is legitimate or not. The Information Security Office has created a flowchart to help determine whether or not a “job opportunity email” is legitimate. We’ve also included an explanation for why each question was asked so you can learn to distinguish scams from legitimate opportunities in the future.

Where to find a legitimate job

As a student, you have access to a wealth of legitimate job opportunities provided through Case Western’s student employment website. You can also apply for jobs directly through employers’ websites, as well as on job-matching sites such as LinkedIn and Indeed. However, when applying for jobs on job-matching sites, be vigilant, as anyone can pose as an employer.
