Supervising practice of motivational interviewing to be highlighted at ODADAS training event

Akron, Ohio—Clinical supervisors of behavioral healthcare services are encouraged to join Deborah Myers, MEd, PCC-S, consultant and trainer from the Ohio SAMI Coordinating Center of Excellence, on Thursday, May 19 at the "Ohio Workforce Development Academy," sponsored by the Ohio Department of Alcohol & Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS). The event takes place at the University of Akron. Myers will present a daylong workshop, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, titled "Clinical Supervision: Strategies to Supervise the Practice of Motivational Interviewing." The Ohio SAMI CCOE is an initiative of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices (CEBP) at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½.

About The Workshop

The abstract for Myer's workshops include the following:

Clinical supervisors who provide meaningful supervision of Motivational Interviewing (MI) skill-development to service-team members must be equipped with some essential tools, including the following: skill identification and competency evaluation; clinical feedback; coaching; and planning. This workshop is designed for clinical supervisors at organizations that provide services to people diagnosed with substance-use disorders or substance-use disorders with other co-occurring behavioral-health and primary-health disorders.

Participants will explore resources for applicability in their supervision of MI competencies and engage in activities designed to develop their ability to supervise the practice of MI. Participants must have prior training or experience in MI.

About The Academy

The 2011 ODADAS Workforce Development Academy will take place from May 17 to 19 in the Student Union at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The Academy provides skill-building training in evidence-based practices and best practices for the following Ohio providers and professionals:

  • Alcohol-and-other-drug prevention, treatment, and recovery
  • Criminal justice
  • Social service
  • Faith-based organizations

The academy and its tracks (of workshops) are coordinated by the Office of Workforce Development and Cultural Competence within the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS). Training will be provided by a team of highly skilled presenters who are experts in their fields. Most of the tracks will take up one day of the academy. Some tracks only take half of a day. If you have chosen a track that only takes up one of the days of the academy, you may choose another training track for the second day of the academy.
