Cleveland, OH—The November/December 2008 cover story of the nationally distributed Social Work Today magazine features the Ohio Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SAMI CCOE), a program of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine. Both the Mandel School and Department of Psychiatry are curriculum innovators: they both have fellowship programs for the study of co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorders.
The story written by David Surface highlights the direct-practice and technical-assistance (consulting, training, and evaluation) experiences of the SAMI CCOE's Ric Kruszynski, MSSA ('93), LISW, LICDC, who is director of consulting and training for the Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) model, an evidence-based practice that improves outcomes for people diagnosed with co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorders. The story primarily explores the evolution, effectiveness, and growing national commitment to IDDT.
The story also features the policy innovations of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services, as well as the work of colleagues in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Minnesota, including the following:
- Robert E. Drake, MD, PhD, of the Evidence-Based Practices Center of the New Hampshire-Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center
- Kim T. Mueser, MD, of the New Hampshire-Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center
- Kenneth Minkoff, MD, of Harvard Medical School
- Cynthia Godin, MA, of the Minnesota Department of Human Services
- Richard Solly, MA, of Hazelden's Publishing and Educational Services
