Fellowships in Social Justice

Shaping Change

The Social Justice Institute accepts fellowship proposals from faculty, staff and students that advance the mission of the Social Justice Institute.  The deadline for the 2019-2020 year has passed.

2019-2020 Proposals:  APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Applicants are encouraged to be creative. Proposals may focus on activism on campus by organizing an event (e.g., inviting a speaker, assembling a panel discussion, arranging a teach-in, or showing a film with discussion, etc.)  Proposals may be community centered, engaging in events and actions off-campus and in work carried out in collaboration with community partners and organizations.  Applicants may also propose creating new courses to count toward the Social Justice minor or they may choose to design and implement a moderately funded research project.

Proposals will be selected on a competitive basis.  Proposals must explain how they are advancing the mission of SJI. Our mission statement reads as follows:

The Social Justice Institute strives to create a just world.  We examine the root causes of social injustice and develop innovative solutions by supporting creative research, scholarship, and pedagogy; social justice leaders on and off campus; and relationships within the university and into the community.  We work to eradicate all systems of oppression by redistributing and expanding resources and opportunities while exalting human dignity. We believe in action, community involvement, education, empathetic relationships, equity, human dignity, inclusiveness, and intergenerational collaboration.

Proposals must also include a budget that is specific to the project needs. At present, faculty and staff time on projects will not be funded. Students, however, may include a modest salary for work on their projects. We recommend that project budgets not exceed $3,000. Exceptions may be made. We recommend that you contact SJI Co-Directors to discuss a project budget that exceeds $3,000.

SJI Fellows will serve for the entire academic year. There will be a meeting each semester to reflect on the SJI fellow experience and to critically examine ways that this process can advance the interests of the Institute.

The ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Social Justice Institute is committed to diversity and strongly encourages women, members of underrepresented groups and the LGBTQ community as well as veterans, individual with disabilities and others to apply. Faculty, staff, and students are all encouraged to apply.
