20 Years of the Schubert Center

1997-1998

  • Schubert Center for Child Development established in the College of Arts and Sciences, Donald Freedheim named founding director.
  • Funds are awarded as grants across the university to support promising research and programs for children and families in the areas of mental illness and child development.

1998-1999

  • First annual research colloquium by Schubert Center grantees.
  • Schubert Center co-hosts a talk on mental health in children and adolescents by William Glasser, MD, author of Reality Therapy.
  • Clearinghouse for Research established on Schubert Center Website.
  • Brisky Fellowship in Psychology established to encourage research on childhood mental disabilities and mental health by Psychology Doctoral Candidates.

1999-2000

  • Childhood Studies Minor introduced.
  • Conference: Innovations in Infancy Interventions.
  • Inauguration of the Childhood Studies program, with a lecture by Myra Bluebond-Langner: In the Shadow of Illness: Illness and Death in the Child’s Social World.
  • Second annual research colloquium held, on the topic of Children’s Mental Health: Medical and Community Linkages.

2000 - 2001

  • Conference: Enriching Children’s Environment: Tunes, Touch, and Toys.
  • “Consortium on Children, Families, and Communities” created between the Schubert Center for Child Development, and the Center on Urban Poverty and Social Change of MSASS.
  • Jill Korbin and Richard Settersten named Schubert Center co-directors.
  • Eight research projects funded for the 2000-2001 year, covering topics in Psychology, Communication Sciences, as well as Genetics, International Child Health, and Pediatrics within UH Rainbow Babies.

2001 - 2002

  • Five-Year Report released.
  • Understanding the Impact of Violence on Children and Adolescents Conference.
  • Research highlight of funded projects by Jim Spilsbury of Anthropology for his work examining children’s differential help-seeking in hazardous situations, and Lyn Turkstra of Communication Sciences for her work on social and communication skills of adolescents with traumatic brain injuries.
  • Rainbow Center for Pediatric Ethics of UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, and The Center for Adolescent Health of the ǿմý School of Medicine become members of the Consortium on Children, Families and Communities.

2003 - 2004

  • Three-day working meeting titled Charting Future Directions for Childhood Studies: Research, Education, and Policy is co-organized by Drs. Jill Korbin and Rick Settersten, attended by a group of 17 international scholars.
  • Schubert Center hosts national meeting of University-Based Child and Family Policy Consortium.
  • Awarded $150,000 in funding for two years by the George Gund Foundation to organize an interdisciplinary program of child-centered education, research, and communication.

2004-2005

  • Child Policy Initiative is launched.
  • Continued Monthly Colloquia “Case Conversations on Children in Research and Policy”.
  • Center for Science and Mathematics Education introduced to Consortium on Children, Families, and Communities.
  • Co-sponsored lecture series with Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities and Case Center for Women on Girls and Girlhood in the United States.
  • Mann Policy Externships are established in Spring 2005.
