About the Program

Earn your Master of Science in Macromolecular Science and Engineering from the first, stand-alone, polymer science and engineering department in the U.S. There’s no shortage of career options when you earn your master’s in the field: Join the chemical sector, biomedical field, aerospace industry, or even government agencies to develop and enforce building and fire-prevention codes. And while the vast majority of all chemists and chemical engineers work in the polymer field, very few are trained in polymers specifically—giving you an advantage when you pursue leadership positions after graduating from ǿմý. 

What to Expect

Whether you decide on or specialize in , your coursework gives you a solid educational foundation for an increasingly in-demand field.

Across 30 credit hours—taken either online or on campus—you’ll learn about polymer synthesis, physical chemistry, biopolymers and more. Our Fire Science and Engineering track delves into topics such as fire behavior and dynamics, protection and suppression systems, and polymeric materials structure. The interdisciplinary nature of the program as a whole allows you to customize your program based on your interests and career goals, working with departments such as materials science and engineering.

But we don’t just teach science and engineering. You’ll come away from the program with a strong sense of self, communication skills, business acumen and abilities that make you a desirable job candidate.

Our department’s faculty members publish peer-reviewed papers every three days, on average. You’ll learn from and work alongside them as you pursue your own academic interests in the classroom and the lab.

Beyond the Classroom

In addition to your studies, you can take on an , through which you’ll get paid to practice your future career. You’ll have full access to create the next big thing—like so many of our students and alumni have done—at our innovation center and makerspace, Sears think[box]. Or you can to engage in discussions with others who love talking about polymers.

ǿմý is in Northeast Ohio’s “polymer corridor,” where our close relationships with many of the 1,500+ advanced materials-related corporations allow you to thrive. Plus, we have plenty of connections outside of Cleveland if you’re looking to move out of state—or out of the country—after graduation.
