Master of Arts

About the Program

Specialize in any geographical, temporal or topical area of history when you pursue a Master of Arts in History at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½â€”the #51 university in the country.

In our master’s program, you'll gain a general understanding of historical theory and methodology that will give you a competitive edge. Whether you choose to pursue a PhD in History (or a related field) after graduation or begin your career in one of countless fields, our program will prepare you to achieve your goals.

Our graduates have gone on to work in anthropology, education, law and politics, in addition to having careers in public history, museum work, secondary school education, digital humanities or a variety of other fields.

What to Expect

Because we admit a competitive number of graduate students per year, our seminar-style courses are small and intensive enough for you to receive considerable individualized attention and support from faculty members. As a result, you’re able to earn your degree in as little as two years.

Once enrolled, you’ll complete several foundational seminars required of all our graduate students:

  • Historiography, Method, and Theory
  • Comparative History; and Historical Research and Writing

And, you can opt to focus on one of our specialized graduate tracks:

  • Social Justice History
  • History of Science in Technology, Environment and Medicine

If you’re pursuing one of these tracks, you’ll focus on additional specialized courses with topics in environmental, technological, patriarchal, racial and other historically related themes.

Beyond the Classroom

If you’re pursuing our Social Justice History track, you’ll take our practicum—a program in which you’ll apply the concepts and methods of social justice history to a contemporary real-world problem. You’ll work with a faculty mentor to find an organization working against some form of oppression (or seeking to advance some aspect of social justice), and, for one semester, you’ll engage with its staff to analyze the origins of the organization (or the larger movement of which it is a part).
