About the Program

Use big data for the good of health. At ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ School of Medicine, our outstanding faculty mentors will equip you to work with data from electronic health records, clinical trials, cohort studies, geo-mapped incidence information for diseases and more. You’ll join the ranks of those who manage, integrate, analyze and interpret data to catalyze research, refine clinical care and shape public policy. In this versatile 16-month program, broad coursework, flexible electives and mentorship provide you with a master’s degree tailored to your own interests and career trajectory. You can choose to pursue a thesis track (Plan A) or complete a graded internship/practicum report for an 11-month intensive pathway (Plan B). A part-time option is also available.

What to Expect

Through this curriculum, you’ll become a confident professional who can collaborate with, manage and lead cross-disciplinary teams. One-on-one attention and mentorship from expert data scientists will help you to define thoughtful inquiries, apply sophisticated computational approaches, interpret results and offer informed advice.

And you'll ground your studies in real competencies. Faculty from across ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s School of Medicine, Weatherhead School of Management and Case School of Engineering will share their unique approaches to data analytics; biomedical, clinical and/or population health research; and computational and systems research design.

You’ll also be invited to collaborate on faculty research and professional work to see first-hand how your studies can be applied in the field. Learn to incorporate informatics with your background—in biology, computer science, statistics, clinical care, health and biomedical sciences, or health care management and administration.

Beyond the Classroom

To support your career growth, you can choose the intensive pathway (Plan B) to complete a practicum or internship of at least 160 hours. Anywhere in the world, you’ll have an opportunity to consult or collaborate on a project specific to your interests. Through this experience, you’ll learn how to be a consulting informaticist, participate in the lifecycle of a project, communicate as a professional and begin transitioning your career. You may even land the job. And your detailed report on the matter serves as a non-thesis culminating project.

Above all, you’ll feel prepared to take your role in data science: design studies, integrate large and complex data sets, manage projects and teams, lead process improvement in clinical settings, or advance research that impacts prevention and treatment. ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½â€™s Enhancing Research and Industry Career Horizons Program (EnRICH) offers you career guidance and connections to partners that further your progress.
