About the Program

Explore a dynamic field of research, clinical care and population health without—or before—committing to a master’s degree through ǿմý’s Biomedical and Health Informatics certificate program. With this certificate, you can take a series of four or five courses (12 or 15 credits) to gain a solid overview and grounding in the fundamentals and practical applications of the field. The best part? All courses are transferable to the university’s biomedical and health informatics master’s program. 

Once accepted into the program, you will have three calendar years to complete the requirements. Most people complete the program within four semesters of acceptance, but the program can be completed in as little as two semesters.

What to Expect

Our program offers an exploration of pragmatic, interdisciplinary areas of study immediately relevant in contemporary health systems or research enterprises. We bring together a diverse group of faculty from across ǿմý School of Medicine, Weatherhead School of Management, and Case School of Engineering. 

Together, we collaborate for a cross-disciplinary approach that offers the opportunity to craft tailored areas of study. Before leaving our program, you will be well versed in core competencies such as data analytics, biomedical, clinical and/or population health research, computational and systems research design.

Quick Fact
If you are an international student in the biomedical and health informatics program, you can apply for a 24-month extension to your optional practical training (OPT) period. This means you may be eligible for up to three years of work in the United States.

Beyond the Classroom

Our program provides grounding across multiple disciplines that are of interest if you seek a career in which you:

  • Analyze patient diagnoses, treatments and outcomes based on electronic health records to inform clinical practice;
  • Design or manage studies to inform quality and safety process improvements;
  • Collaborate in analysis of large genetic and various “omics” studies, integrated with clinical or population data, to advance the understanding of diseases; or
  • Design and manage studies that draw from clinical, cohort or population data to assess and develop devices, therapeutics or other interventions.

Admission Details

Entrance to the certificate program will be administered by the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences. Individuals who want to participate in the program should complete an application form that includes a brief personal statement describing the reason(s) for seeking health informatics training and a recent CV or resume.

We assume that most applicants to the certificate program will have already obtained a postsecondary (e.g. AS, BS, BA, MS, PhD) or advanced clinical (e.g. MD, MSN, DMD) degree and be a current health or clinical professional.
