About the Program

Add bioethical expertise to your skill set while you train to become a physician in our dual Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Arts (MA) in Bioethics and Medical Humanities program at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ School of Medicine, the #1 private medical school in Ohio.

You can join this MD/MA program if you’re a medical student enrolled through the School of Medicine’s University Program or Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine program. When you graduate, you’ll be prepared to become a premier physician who is keenly aware of and able to adapt to ongoing bioethical issues.

What to Expect

You must apply and be accepted to the MD and MA programs separately, but this process can take place concurrently. If you’re a medical school student, you can apply to the master’s degree program before the start of the fall semester of your first year.

Then, while in medical school you’ll work with your advisor to lay out your master’s degree schedule. You can choose electives based on your interests—whether that’s mental illness and bioethics, international bioethics or neuroethics.

Once you’re here, you'll study in our state-of-the-future with Cleveland Clinic, where you'll learn alongside nursing, dental and physician assistant students. This approach, called interprofessional education, is a hallmark of our MD program—designed to prepare you for the team-based healthcare system in which you'll practice in the real world.

Bioethics and Medical Humanities concerns itself fundamentally with value-laden issues that emerge in the delivery and practice of healthcare, biomedicine, the life sciences and human health more generally. The complexity of these issues requires that they be approached from multiple perspectives, viewed through multiple disciplinary lenses if they are to be well understood and addressed. Whether it be end of life decision making in the clinic, structural racism and health disparities in biomedicine, climate change and human health, or futuristic concerns like AI, human fusions and cyborgs, our nationally and internationally recognized multidisciplinary faculty, four major academic medical center affiliates, and international partnerships afford students an unparalleled opportunity to learn, explore, and grow.
