Spencer graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, focusing on Ecology. During his undergraduate years, he conducted research on diseases in wild white-footed mice, exploring their potential as model organisms for human diseases. After graduation, he joined a research group studying the effects of climate on black-legged tick populations.
Medicine had always been an interest for Spencer, but it wasn’t a career path initially suggested to him. After his seasonal research position ended, he shifted his career focus, though the idea of pursuing medicine stayed with him. A pivotal moment came when a close family member faced a major medical emergency. Watching the dedication of the healthcare team during her recovery inspired him to follow his dream, leading him to the PRIME program at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½.
Spencer chose PRIME for its intimate cohort size and challenging curriculum. Having attended a large university, he valued PRIME’s personalized approach and supportive environment. He found the program’s sense of comradery invaluable, working alongside peers from diverse backgrounds all striving toward the same goal. The program’s coursework has been instrumental in preparing him for the MCAT, reinforcing key concepts and elevating the quality of his studies.
Transitioning from a full-time job to being a full-time student was one of Spencer’s biggest challenges. However, with determination, he adapted to the change and has excelled academically while forming strong connections with his professors. Beyond the classroom, Spencer has immersed himself in the Cleveland community. He volunteers in local emergency departments, shadows physicians, and serves as Treasurer for a nonprofit organization focused on improving the quality of life for elderly and long-term care individuals.
Spencer encourages prospective students to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and the Cleveland area. While academics are important, he believes in the value of exploring experiences outside the classroom to grow both personally and professionally. With his dedication and passion for helping others, Spencer is on a remarkable path to achieving his goal of becoming a physician.
