The Importance of Educator Assessment Knowledge and Best Practices in Measurement

Kelli Qua, PhD, Evaluation Associate in the offices of the CTSC and Curricular Affairs and Assessment at the ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ School of Medicine recently presented at the American Educational Research Association's (AERA) 2019 annual meeting in Toronto.

Research by Dr. Qua and co-author Dr. Karpinski at Kent State University has shown that educators spend as much as half of their time involved in assessment related activities. Because of the amount of time educators devote to these practices, assessment competency is essential to the success of not only educators, but also students. Assessment literacy is the understanding of fundamental assessment concepts and procedures deemed likely to influence educational decisions. Several measures of assessment knowledge exist and vary in their purpose. However, thorough evaluation of existing measures of assessment literacy is limited. The present study investigated the psychometric properties (i.e., the reliability and validity) of the Assessment Literacy Inventory using Rasch/IRT technique and Factor Analysis. Results inform the creation and adaptation of valid and reliable measures of assessment knowledge and a better understanding of the assessment preparedness of educators.
