The Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC) of Northern Ohio hosted the inaugural Epic Cosmos Datathon on December 7, 2024. The event brought together over 100 researchers and clinicians from CTSC partner institutions to engage in collaborative discussions and multidisciplinary teamwork, all aimed at expanding knowledge of data science. The primary goal was to raise awareness of Epic Cosmos, a vast electronic health record database accessible to all CTSC members.
“I loved seeing teams of individuals from several different organizations meeting for the first time, then quickly storming and norming to produce top-notch research questions and queries. Cosmos ended up being a great catalyst for a unique CTSC networking event that we are committing to reproducing and evolving annually!.” -Yasir Tarabichi, MD, MSCR, Chief Health AI Officer, MetroHealth
On the day of the Datathon, teams were randomly assigned to encourage networking and foster collaboration across institutions. The competition challenged teams to answer a research question by analyzing data from Epic Cosmos. At the end of the event, each team presented their findings, and participants voted to determine the winners.
The planning committee for the 2024 event included members from ǿմý, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth, and University Hospitals. In addition, more than a dozen representatives from Epic’s headquarters in Wisconsin attended the event, offering guidance on the Epic platform and assisting with team presentations.
“I was fortunate to be part of the planning committee for the first CTSC Epic Cosmos Datathon, where I had the opportunity to contribute to its successful execution. We came from diverse backgrounds from four different organizations in Cleveland, but we formed a dedicated team working closely to bring all the details together, from recruitment of participants to arrangements in logistics and technical assistance. The crew from CTSC and Epic were extremely helpful throughout the planning process and on the event day, ensuring everything ran smoothly. During the datathon, we had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with many talented researchers and healthcare professionals. It was inspiring to see how engaged everyone was, with lively and thoughtful discussions. The presentations at the end of the day were particularly interesting, showcasing the creativity of the participants enabled by a powerful tool like Cosmos. The overall feedback we received was very encouraging, motivating us to consider hosting this event again in the future.” - Jingdi Shen, Data Scientist, Center for Computational Life Sciences, Cleveland Clinic.

The CTSC of Northern Ohio plans to make the Epic Cosmos Datathon an annual event. “[The Datathon] was AMAZING. We worked together across all of our CTSC sites to create one of the biggest “single day” events for our CTSC ever that involved almost 100 people over 8 hours. We are also leading the Epic community in that this was one of the biggest Cosmos Datathons EVER within the Epic community. It brought institutions and people that have not worked before to work together, hopefully forming new and lasting collaborations.” -David Kaelber, MD, PhD, MPH, FAAP, FACP, FACMI, FAMIA, Chief Health Informatics Officer and VP of Health Informatics and Patient Engagement Technologies, MetroHealth.
