Biography
Xavier Williams, a third-generation Black farmer from rural Ohio, has always understood the transformative power of education, a value instilled by his family. Pursuing this principle, he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Electrical Physics from Cleveland State University. Aspiring to integrate these disciplines into biomechanical applications His commitment to ethical engineering began early, culminating in his induction into the Order of the Engineer, where he vowed to uphold ethical practices.
For his capstone project, Xavier helped develop the Bent Knee Adapter, a revolutionary innovation in above-knee prosthesis design. This adapter mitigates weight and adapts to diverse users' needs, making prosthetics more accessible and functional. He further collaborated with ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s Thinkbox to create a protective shield for prosthetic foot sensors, exemplifying his dedication to practical, user-focused solutions.
Professionally, Xavier honed his skills at Hitachi GE, Parker Hannifin, and Helix Linear Technologies. At Hitachi, he gained invaluable insight into nuclear technology's impact on people and the environment, contributing to the cleanup of Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi disaster. This role also allowed him to experience Japanese culture firsthand, deepening his global perspective.
Xavier returned to ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ (ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½) as a Biomedical Engineering master's student, where his interest in ethics was reignited through exposure to bioethics. This passion led him to pursue a PhD in Bioethics, aiming to become a transdisciplinary ethical engineer. His mission is to develop and apply biomedical technologies within safe, equitable frameworks that benefit all people, not just the privileged few. Through this journey, Xavier embodies the intersection of engineering, ethics, and social responsibility. To this end his interests are in AI ethics, Neuro ethics, and Genetic Ethics. Focusing on the new technologies entering these spheres, developing them alongside colleagues, and creating preemptive ethical frameworks to work off of for each.
