What Bioethics and Medical Humanities program are you a part of?

The Bioethics and Medical Humanities undergraduate minor.

What contributed to your decision to pursue a bioethics education at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½?

My interest in bioethics began from my curiosity about how American biomedicine decided on its moral structure. Healthcare is incredibly complex; healthcare decision-making considers intersections of identity, economic incentives, religious beliefs, and scientific ideals. I felt sure that ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s well-known bioethics program could help me explore these topics and connect with experts in the field.

What has been the most impactful or your favorite part of the program so far?

The bioethics faculty are incredibly supportive and actively support the growth of bioethics students. Not only have I gotten the chance to attend the 2023 American Society for Bioethics and Humanities conference on scholarship, but I have had mentors that advised me on how to best utilize these kinds of opportunities. For example, I have learned many research skills and gained new perspectives on bioethics from Dr. Grubbs while working on potential projects and attending ASBH together.

What are your plans for after graduation and how will you utilize the skills and knowledge learned in this program, to pursue those goals?

In preparation for medical school, I plan to take a gap year to gain additional clinical experience and complete some passion projects. Specifically, I am interested in the overlap and distinctions between psychiatry and neurology, and how this affects patient care. The ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ bioethics program has not only prepared me to apply the methods of bioethics to this topic, but has also provided me with background knowledge to study it in the context of current issues.
